The kitchen at Rancho Abierto is in a yurt. Yesterday, was such a cool example of people helping each other, many cultures overlapping and expressing themselves through food, so the yurt is the setting for all of these glimpses:
From about 10:30 am to 5:30pm, I and others were helping Dennis (from Ukraine) and his wife Laci (from USA) make borscht and piroshkis, which he remembers his grandma making as a child (people helping were from Singapore, Canada, USA, and Ukraine). In that time, Daniel came in and started a batch of kombucha. He and his wife used to have a kombucha business in Tennessee. Someone donated some equipment so he is aiming to make 5 to 10 gallons per week! Also, Bernice (from Mexico) came in and reheated some pozole which she had made a different day, and shared it among those of us in the kitchen. Linda (from Singapore) fried frozen shrimp dumplings and shared them among the people in the yurt. Also, I made a batch of brownies to give to someone for their birthday and someone else made smoothies. All of this flowed in and between each other in a really pleasant way.
